Back in 2014 I found myself starting a new chapter. Having spent the last few years touring in a punk band, a band that I’d been in since I was 15 and had built my whole identity around, at 25 it was all coming to an end. Over the years I had written some songs on an acoustic guitar which my friend Nick Smeaton had recorded for me the year before, so I decided to release them. I had no idea what I was doing and when the distributor asked me what the name of the label was I didn’t have one, it was just me. Having been listening a lot to Laura Jane Grace’s EP at the time I picked one out of the air ‘Harsh Realm Records’ named after the great song ‘Harsh Realm’.
A year or two later I started learning jewellery making with Rising Tides, who generously gave me her time and patience to teach me the basics of her craft. After a year or so of making I had to come up with a name and it felt only natural to carry on under the Harsh Realm banner. Not long after I very vaguely described to my brother from another mother Shamanink - Marco my idea of how the logo should look, somehow from the jumbled descriptions he drew me the perfect logo. Ever since I’ve wanted to replicate his vision in a piece of jewellery. I don’t have his artistic skill but this is about as close as I’ve come so far. It’s funny when you think back how many favours from others our journeys rely upon. From the outside this looks like a one man business and it is, but it’s also built on the generosity and support of so many people, more than I could name here. I have a lot to be grateful for.
