Eco Sterling Silver & Sterling Silver Necklace
This piece was originally inspired by the Moroccan lamps and plates we have in our house, beautiful mandala-like creations, made of luminous glass which allow the intricate patterns to come to life when illuminated.
This one particular pattern, that is to be found on the back of this piece, kept calling out to me for aesthetic reasons rather than anything more symbolic, but as I read more about the 6 pointed star I realised that it’s a symbol that pops up in almost all world religions.
I was particularly interested in its significance in Hinduism. Termed ‘Shatkona’, this symbol represents the divine union between masculine and feminine. The upward triangle of the shape representing Shiva and the downward triangle representing Shakti.
This reminded me of the Carl Jung idea I love, which is that in order to create a mature and healthy psyche, we must all incorporate our inner sexual opposite. For Jung, this inner feminine in men was termed the ‘Anima’ and the female inner masculine ‘Animus’.
So often in our culture we are expected to perform strict, performative versions of masculinity and femininity, and yet this kind of posturing normally requires deep repression. Children seem comfortable playing with their identity and roles but as we grow older the expectations of who we must be seem to become more entrenched. Even as we begin to grasp this as a society we seem intent on labelling and putting people or ourselves in boxes rather than understanding that we all exist on a spectrum with no true polar opposites.
Therefore, like all wisdom, the truth lies somewhere in the middle, in the balance between opposites, and perhaps to become more comfortable with who we are, we must strive to find those parts of ourselves that our culture has demanded we put away.
