Double Sided Eco Sterling Silver Necklace

As above, so below is an aphorism that dates back to the Emerald Tablet, a text from the Hermetic tradition. It’s a paraphrase from the original text which reads ‘that which is below is like that which is above and that which is above is like that which is below’. It has been widely used in occultism and mysticism to refer to the idea that whatever we experience in the earthly realm is a mirror image of that which occurs in the heavenly realms.

Some have also suggested that it could also be relevant in a scientific sense. If we look at the internal structures of the body they often provide microscopic examples of the patterns we see in nature. For example, the dendritic structure of neurons in the brain closely resemble the root networks of plant life. Furthermore, fungal mycelium networks actually allow different plants and trees to communicate with each other in a similar way to neural networks that link up different parts of the brain. What occurs in the body gives us clues about what occurs outside of ourselves and vice versa.

I also love to think about the implications of this phrase on our moral world. We are often quick to make judgements about political events and speak with certainty about solutions but what do our personal lives look like? We know that conflict is damaging when looking at the bloodshed it causes on the level of nation-states but are we able to manage conflict effectively in our own lives, or do we perpetuate anger and conflict in our interactions? We may argue that hierarchy and priviledge is wrong but do we always make sure we’re kind to those who serve us in daily life, people at tills, bus drivers, colleagues etc?

'If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him… We need not wait to see what others do.' - Gandhi

I love this idea because I think it avoids the feelings of apathy and despondency that often emerge from engaging with news media. It makes change available to us in all our small decisions, it also makes us more responsible. The actions we take have ramifications at the wider level. Maybe if we want to see a fairer more beautiful world we can start by cultivating that world in our immediate surroundings.
