From the earliest age, I sought nature as a place of refuge; as an antidote to the pressures of civilised life. Through its burbling streams, I came to understand the sensual solace of silence. Through watching rain on the water, I learned of the cohabitation of complexity and simplicity; the relationship between chaos and order. In its forests, I came to understand how one could be both insignificant and fundamental.
There is a reason that all religions retell a journey into nature as a fundamental step in the process of becoming. Whether it be Christ’s wanderings in the desert, Gautama Buddha’s enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, or Muhammad receiving revelation in the Cave of Hira. All forgo earthly security and entrust themselves to the natural world, still and silent, they transcend the mutterings of the mind and begin to hear a new voice.
In the modern world, we value intellect above all else, but nature has its own wisdom, one of few words: powerful, assured and ancient. Our current age feels turbulent, temperamental and fragile. I can’t help but think that in our worship of technological progress, we have sacrificed our connection to our earth. That we exist untethered and ungrounded, soaring like Icarus, devoid of humility and uneducated in grace.
Yet so many of us in times of crisis will find ourselves back in the arms of nature. Walking across rolling hills to clear the mind, submerging ourselves in the ocean to feel cleansed and seeking peace amongst the pines. Nature remains and will always remain a place of rest and rejuvenation. A sanctuary amongst the temples of distraction.
