Time in nature serves as a reminder of our cosmic place. The insignificance of our problems and daily struggles when viewed from the perspective of totality. The power of a lightning storm or the vastness of the ocean, reducing human hubris, shifting our outlook beyond.
 
I feel that the modern idea that we manifest our lives through effort or will brings us so much pressure. Compare that with the philosophies of the East which emphasise surrender or finding your place in amongst the flow of nature, the Tao. The compulsion to leave a mark or to create a legacy is in some sense always futile. Even the most famous individuals of our current age will fade with the sands of time.
 
Yet, it is also true to say that every one of our actions contains tiny ripples that transcend the original deed. In the grand scheme of history, one action can have an unimaginable cascading effect on the future. In this sense, I wonder if our focus on the grand is short-sighted.
 
Perhaps greatness, in a deeper sense, is created when we aim to make our daily actions and interactions more beautiful. Perhaps one small act of kindness or courage could unfurl a cascade of events more influential than many of what we consider to be the most important moments of human history. It is impossible to know the power of our actions from the perspective of eternity.
 
For this reason, the best we can do is to try to live beautifully in every moment of our lives and surrender the desire for remembrance. Nature continues to provide us with poetic examples of its awe-inspiring power and vastness and yet we still all have a part to play. A part that must be acted out with dignity, responsibility and compassion. We as individuals will all be forgotten but the effect of our actions will live on long after we are gone.
