Since having my daughter, I have learned to love sunrise. The amber ocean hues, the mystic, silent peace. The morning holds a special beauty reserved for those who are up at that hour.
In my twenties, I would only see sunrise at the end of the day, sobering up from a revelrous night or on long drives home from playing shows in distant cities. A beautiful feeling of a life lived on the outside, returning home whilst others wake to start their day.
Now I see sunrise to wake for work myself. Up at 5, earning the money to make ends meet for my family, and there is beauty in that too. Nature rewards my efforts with oranges, purples and pinks. Driving across the deer park in the morning mist, views unfurl, cinematic in their romance.
The symbolism of sunrise could become cliché and yet the promise of the emerging sun after long periods of darkness remains profound and poetic for many of us who see the world in such a way.
From my conversations with others, it seems like many of us have had a hard and arduous year. Yet the emergence of the sun each morning remains as a reminder that all is forever changing and that for those who are able to endure the dark, another morning is promised, with all the possibilities for beauty and light that sunrise brings.
As winter approaches, it feels like the magnificence of the crisp, misty morning is offered as recompensation for the long dark evenings. Life can feel much the same, fleeting moments of beauty and profundity, offered up alongside their opposite, the twisting and illusory carnival of life. The joy and peace made all the more sacred by the experience of its opposite.
Therefore, these mornings must be celebrated for what they are, nature’s answer to sorrow, death and darkness. Drifting reflections of colour, a celebration of peace and joy in amongst it all and a call for us to find little shards of yellow and orange in what can feel like a grey and dark season of life.
