The Call of the Ocean
Hemimorphite Necklace
Eco Sterling Silver

In times of tumult or hardship, it seems that the human spirit is often drawn back to the ocean; that the chaos of our daily lives requires the vastness of the seas to bring us back into homeostasis.

Poets throughout the centuries have sought the ocean as a counterpoint to the importance we assign to our struggles. A few hours staring into the abyss, witnessing its eternal patterns beautifully unfolding without thought, playing out on the surface and further into its depths, serve as a reminder of the fleeting nature of existence and its incomprehensible profundity.

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about the personal mythologies we assign ourselves. The story of our lives and the meaning we grant to our suffering. The pinnacle that we strive towards and the successes which give our struggles and grief meaning.

We often see our lives as a progression towards a goal, whether that be material or spiritual. Yet in the vastness of eternity, it can all start to seem inconsequential, whether we achieve our grand dreams or tragically fail; all is eventually forgotten with the shifting sands of time.

What we are all granted eternally is the present moment. Regardless of where we sit in our personal mythology, we have the capacity to be perfectly present in the now. Maybe that really is the best we can ever hope for, to be sat, witnessing existence unhounded by anxiety or thoughts of the future.

Whether it be staring out across an ocean skyline or savouring a cup of coffee, we are all presented with this opportunity in every moment. It’s not transcendence that can be bought through buying a course, book or experience; it is eternally available to all of us at any moment in which we let self-judgement and fear of the future slip briefly from our minds. A silence that comes not through effort or exertion but simply as a blessing to be savoured when it arrives and, like a wave from the ocean, let go lightly when it slips back into the seas.
