Since the time of St John of the Cross, the term ‘The Dark Night of the Soul’ has been used to describe the emergence of meaninglessness, existential dread and uncertainty that can come to us at certain junctures in our lives. Often after traumatic events or ceaseless attempts to maintain meaning through hedonism and attainment, we find ourselves in a metaphorical wilderness; groundless, we scrabble around in the dark, grasping at aspects of ourselves or our reality to hold onto and finding ourselves lost in the void, overcome with fear, anxiety or illness.

It is at this point where we often question the identity we have spent our early life creating, inheriting and maintaining. We find ourselves forced to shed constructed identities, the ones we forged to please and stay safe.

Although arduous, in this process, we are granted the opportunity to reconnect to a truer sense of self. We are once again moved by the passions of our childhood; music, art and dance deconstruct the walls of the heart and our emotional world becomes accessible again. We become playful and relearn the value of true rest.

It is only through this burning down that we are given the opportunity to build anew and to build true. The tendency of modern cultures to provide a constant stream of distraction prevents us from embracing the darker aspects of existence and our personal experience until illness or burnout forces us to face our hurt head-on.

By pathologising these states, modern cultures miss the opportunity for growth. A full comprehension of the suffering present in the human experience can connect us to others, forging a more authentic and felt sense of compassion. As difficult and unendurable as these experiences can be, I maintain faith that they are directing us towards a deeper, fuller and more loving experience of existence. What is grief if not the visceral awareness of just how deeply we have loved? It is from this place that we can rest in the darkest depths of the night and await the emergence of those hopeful shards of light upon the horizon.
