Most of us, at some point in our lives, will have a glimpse of the eternal, a short respite from normal waking reality when the anxieties of existence fall from view and suddenly everything takes on a sacred beauty and profundity. 
 
Often this occurs in nature, when walking alone in the silence of the wilderness, but it can also strike us in the midst of the most mundane of daily acts. Our sense of self slips, we forget who we are for a moment, and our individual troubles dissolve with our sense of self.

In these moments, it feels like the veil is momentarily lifted, and we are struck by a profound certainty that everything is unfolding exactly as it should, despite the rational mind’s awareness of heartbreak, loss and bloodshed.

Many of our greatest creatives have lived in this space: William Blake, Vincent Van Gogh and WB Yeats, to name a few. It seems that to inhabit this place on a permanent basis puts you at odds with the wider culture; true spiritual values are antagonistic to our social norms, economic systems and even religious institutions. They exist as outsiders. They push society and culture forward to become wiser and more beautiful, and yet, so often, it is to their own detriment.

Those of us who get just a glimpse are perhaps luckier. We can use these experiences to hold onto faith in a deeper and more beautiful aspect of existence, one that exists just behind the banalities and trivialities playing out on the surface. We can take this knowing and yet still exist in the world of sensuality and nature, enjoying the pleasures the world has to offer without becoming totally consumed by them. The world is a beautiful mystery, one which no one fully comprehends and yet these experiences allow us to trust in a world that can so often leave us grief-stricken and longing.
